Daisy STEM Career Exploration - GSOC Inspire

With the Inspire Box

To complete the Daisy STEM Career Exploration Badge, complete the following steps:

1. What She Does: Watch the Daisy Planet, World, or Story video on the GSOC Inspire site. Ask your Girl Scouts what careers they are interested in learning about to help make your choice on what path to take.  

Optional: You are more than welcome to watch more than one!

2. Learn About a STEM Career: Watch at least 1 video about a specific career woman. Choose a woman to explore in depth from your video, or check out the Career Women Library. 

3. Explore your future with a STEM Career Fashion Show!

3. • Using the supplies in the Daisy Inspire Box, create a fashion show! 

   • Ask your Daisies, “what are some different careers that use STEM?”. Make a list of their ideas and thoughts. 

   • Once you have thought about some jobs in STEM, have Daisies think about one they would like to be the fashion show! Or you can assign them different jobs using the list they created, or the cards in the kit. Daisies can do this in pairs, small groups, or individually. 

   • Allow the Daisies to explore the box with accessories for their job. While they are getting on their accessories, ask them questions such as “what kinds of things do you do in this career? What tools do you use? Why did you choose this career?” to help foster conversations and role-play. They can also make their props from paper or other items nearby. 

For more fun: Put on some runway music, use a hallway or sit in two rows looking at each other to create a “catwalk” for your fashions! Use the pretend microphone to narrate their fashions and relevance in the world of STEM. For example, you might say, “Here comes Ella in her protective white coat and goggles. Scientists like Ella work in labs with different tools and measure chemicals. They make medicines to help sick people get better. Let’s give Ella a STEM square of applause!” Have everyone clap in a square, one corner for each area of STEM!

4. Conclusion

• Ask your Daisies if they learned something new today. Did they learn about a new career? Did they learn what their friend wants to be when they grow up?

• Thank Daisies for participating in the activity with you. They have a long way from picking their career, but it is never too early to learn and try new things!

Alternate Activity: Want to take this a step further or the above activity wont work for your troop? Make a vision frame! 

• Ask Daisies, “how can you turn what you like today into a career in the future?”. Explain that Daisies are going to create a vision frame that reflects their interests and how they can become a part of the Daisies future careers. Guide Daisies to draw pictures of things they enjoy and draw themselves in the future on it. Tell them “it is like a magical window into the future! What do you want to be doing, what do you want to have that you like right now?”. Ask questions such as, “What is your job? What are you doing? How are you dressed? Are you using a tool, like a ruler, computer, or a hammer?”. 

• If Daisies are unsure about their future, it's okay! Encourage them to draw a picture as they see themselves, surrounded by their favorite things in the frame. 

• When everyone is done, invite Daisies to share some of their favorite things on their frame or their vision for the future. Ask questions to encourage discussion, such as “what are some things you like most? How do you use STEM?”.
