Complete the following steps to earn the Brownie STEM Career Exploration Badge:
What She Does: Watch the Brownie Planet, World, or Story video on the GSOC Inspire site. Ask your Girl Scouts what careers they are interested in learning about to help make your choice on what path to take.
Optional: You are more than welcome to watch more than one!
Learn About a STEM Career: Watch at least 2 videos about specific career women. Choose two women to explore in depth from your video, or check out the Career Women Library.
Explore your future with a STEM Career Fashion Show & Interview!
Using the supplies in the Inspire Box, create a fashion show!
Ask your Brownies, “what are some different careers that use STEM?”. Make a list of their ideas and thoughts.
Once you have thought about some jobs in STEM, have Brownies think about one they would like to represent for the fashion show & interview! Troop Leaders could also assign them different jobs using the cards in the kit. Brownies can do this in pairs, small groups, or individually.
Allow the Brownies to explore the box with accessories. While they are getting on their accessories, ask them questions such as “what kinds of things do you do in this career? What tools do you use? Why did you choose this career?” to help foster conversations and role-play. They can also make their props from paper or other items nearby.
Finally, have them prepare for their interview. Pass out the interview questions. They can use the whiteboard markers and write out the answers to their questions to prepare for their “on-stage” interview.
For more fun: Put on some runway music, use a hallway or sit in two rows looking at each other to create a “catwalk” for your fashions! Have a troop leader be the “host” at the beginning of the runway. As they enter the runway, use the microphone to ask them the 5 questions regarding their STEM fashion. They will answer all 5 questions, then do a runway walk!
Questions:
What job do you have?
What do you do in this job?
Where do you work?
What do you wear?
What can students learn today to help them get this job?
Below are some examples of answers for these questions. Help your Girl Scouts answer successfully and confidently!
Now What? Thank your Girl Scouts for their participation! Remind them that they can do anything they set their mind to! This is a great spot to provide motivation and support for their hopes and dreams. It also provided an idea on how to get started, doing things that interest them! The importance of trying something new too, maybe they will find a new activity that they never thought of and they really like! They have a long way away from picking a career, but they always have the chance to follow their dreams and learn new things!
Take it Further: Pick some STEM topics your Girl Scouts were really interested in and find time to do a new STEM badge! Interested in being an Astronaut? Check out the Space Science Badge! Animal Sciences? Check out the Pets Badge!
Alternate Activity: Want to take this a step further or the above activity wont work for your troop? Check out the other activities that are listed “with printer” and “without printer” for some alternate ideas.
